1906 ATLANTA RACE RIOT ART AND REMEMBERANCE COMMITTEE CALL TO ATLANTA'S CREATIVE COMMUNITY
Call for Proposals
The Coalition to Remember the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot announces plans for the exhibition WHAT COLOR THE DAWN: Breaking The Silence on the 1906 Race Riot. Hosted by EyeDrum Art & Music Gallery, the exhibition will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 1906 Atlanta Race riot. The exhibition dates are August 19, 2006 through September 30, 2006.
WHAT COLOR THE DAWN: Breaking The Silence on the 1906 Race Riot is part of a larger city-wide year-long commemoration to acknowledge and learn from this neglected chapter in Atlanta's history. Other projects include the groundbreaking exhibit "Red was the Midnight" opening at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in May 2006.
On September 22, 1906, white mobs poured into the Five Points area intent on racial violence. Enflamed by months of political rhetoric and newspaper sensationalism that fed racial fears and stereotypes, the violence against black citizens spread rapidly to East Atlanta, to Brownsville and Inman Park. In the end, at least twelve were dead, hundreds injured; fearful for their lives, many fled the city, their fates somehow erased from history. (Visit http://www.bookmarkmedia.com/Atlanta 1906/site/index.html for more information on the riot.)
The Coalition to Remember the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot is reaching out to the artistic communities in Atlanta and beyond to participate through their perspective mediums in events in response to this neglected history. To learn more about The Coalition visit us at http://www.1906atlantaraceriot.org.
The deadline for proposal submissions is May 15, 2006. Works in all media will be considered.
The Coalition is not a grant making organization. We are actively seeking public and private financial support. At such time as we receive funding, we will disseminate them through appropriate mechanisms. We encourage self-funding and will provide in-kind support.
Anyone wishing to participate in this exhibition is encouraged to send their submissions to the Coalition at: artremember@1906atlantaraceriot.org. Mailed proposals can be sent to Kevin Sipp 1424 Carter Road, Decatur, GA. 30030.
